“Walter Cup Trophy Missing en Route to Celebration”

Date:

The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced on Friday that the Montreal Victoire’s Walter Cup trophy is currently missing. The league stated that the trophy did not arrive at its intended destination as scheduled and is actively collaborating with the shipping company to locate it.

The trophy was supposed to be sent to Lethbridge, Alberta, to be with Victoire forward Dara Greig for a scheduled event. However, upon the container’s arrival, the Walter Cup was not inside, prompting Greig to postpone her celebration with the trophy, including a public appearance at VisitLethbridge.com Arena.

Unlike the NHL’s Stanley Cup, the PWHL does not assign a dedicated individual to accompany the trophy when it travels with the players. The missing Walter Cup is a replica given to championship-winning teams for their possession, while the original trophy remains housed at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

The trophy, crafted by Tiffany & Co., is made of sterling silver and weighs approximately 35 pounds, standing at 24 inches in height and 13 inches wide. It features intricate engravings symbolizing the league’s six founding franchises and showcases the past championship teams on its base.

Montreal secured the Walter Cup by defeating Ottawa in a decisive Game 4, marking the first Canadian team to claim the PWHL championship title. The trophy is named after PWHL founder Mark Walter and his wife Kimbra, who played a significant role in the league’s establishment.
