Thunder Bay native Krista Scharf is set to lead Team Despins as skip for the upcoming 2026-2027 season. Following her previous team disbanding in March after a successful decade, which included multiple appearances at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Scharf is eager to return to competitive curling.
Representing both Ontario and Northern Ontario at the Scotties 12 times, Scharf brings a wealth of experience, having secured two silver and two bronze medals. Expressing her enthusiasm for rejoining the sport, Scharf mentioned that she had initially planned to focus on coaching her children but welcomed the opportunity to play competitively again.
Team Despins approached Scharf recently to fill a spot left vacant by Nicole Westlund-Stewart due to a back injury. Excited about the chance to compete while balancing her personal life, Scharf emphasized her commitment to playing major league games and practicing when possible.
The transition to a new team presents a significant adjustment for Scharf, but she is eager to contribute her experience and support her new teammates. Team Despins aims to compete for the Northern Ontario championship and secure a spot at the 2027 Scotties, with a lineup that includes Abby Deschene, Robyn Despins, Rebecca Carr, and Nicole Westlund-Stewart.
To prepare for the upcoming season, Scharf highlighted the importance of rigorous practice sessions. With limited time before the competition in January, the team plans to dedicate themselves to training diligently. Scharf’s competitive spirit drives her to help her teammates perform at their best and strive for success at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.
