“Canada Races to Develop Homegrown Rocket Industry”

Date:

Canada, being the only G7 nation without its own launch capabilities, is striving to develop a Canadian-made rocket. Several Canadian companies are in a race to provide the country with its own access to space, amid concerns that SpaceX might reduce its orbit rides. However, these rocket companies face challenges due to high costs, tight timelines, and shifting government priorities.

Without its own rocket launch capabilities, Canada relies on external sources, mainly SpaceX, to launch satellites. These satellites are crucial for various purposes such as telecommunications, military applications like threat detection, and earth observation like wildfire monitoring.

To address this issue, the Canadian government has identified space as a key sovereign capability and introduced legislation to enable launches from Canadian soil. Recent funding initiatives, including $8.3 million for three Canadian companies, aim to achieve light-lift rocket capabilities by 2028.

NordSpace, founded in 2022, is focused on building satellites and launch technologies. Despite an unsuccessful rocket test in 2025, the company is gearing up for another attempt. Reaction Dynamics is also working on innovative engine designs, with both companies aiming to achieve orbital rocket launches by 2028.

Canada Rocket Company, the newest entrant, aims to build a medium-lift rocket capable of carrying multiple satellites into orbit simultaneously. The company has attracted significant investments, hired experienced engineers, and is constructing a test facility to meet its target launch date in 2032.

As SpaceX transitions to its larger Starship rocket, there are concerns about reduced access to Falcon 9 launches. This shift could create opportunities for emerging rocket companies like Canada Rocket Company. Canadian satellite communications company Kepler, a frequent Falcon 9 user, is exploring alternative launch providers like Rocket Lab.

The development of a Canadian rocket industry is seen as essential to fill the gap left by SpaceX’s changing focus. With private and public funding flowing into the sector, optimism is growing that Canada can establish a successful rocket launch program. However, industry experts caution that significant investments and time will be required to achieve reliable rocket launches from Canada.
