More than 170 Jewish individuals in the entertainment industry, including Hannah Einbinder, Joel Coen, and Canadian filmmaker Emma Seligman, have signed a public statement supporting American actor Mark Ruffalo against what they termed an “unjust smear campaign.”
The open letter, released on Tuesday, conveys the unified message of Jewish artists, writers, and creative professionals to the world, stating “Enough!” The letter defends Ruffalo against allegations of antisemitism for his comments on Paramount Skydance’s potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery and its connection to the conflict in Gaza.
Paramount Skydance, partly owned by CEO David Ellison and his father Larry Ellison, has openly expressed support for Israel, with a senior executive confirming technology sharing with the Israeli military in the past.
CBC News has reached out to representatives of Mark Ruffalo, Paramount Skydance, and Oracle for comments on the matter.
In response to the accusations, Paramount criticized Ruffalo for using antisemitic tropes in his critique of the deal, stating that terms like “genocide” and “apartheid” in the context of a business transaction were inappropriate and belittled the real suffering associated with those terms.
While Ruffalo has not directly addressed the recent letter, he has shared a video on Instagram criticizing the proposed merger. He has refuted claims of antisemitism, emphasizing that his criticisms were directed at specific actions rather than targeting Jewish individuals.
The ongoing dispute between Ruffalo and Paramount has led to delays in the $110 billion US merger between Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. due to legal challenges from 12 U.S. state attorneys general citing antitrust concerns.
The latest statement in support of Ruffalo includes notable figures like author Naomi Klein, retired rabbi David Mivasair, physician Gabor Maté, Ilana Glazer, and Jane Schoenbrun, who stand in solidarity with Ruffalo and others speaking out against perceived injustices.
Ruffalo’s criticism of the proposed merger, particularly focusing on Oracle’s involvement with the Israeli military, has sparked debates on the potential consequences of such business deals. He highlighted concerns about job losses, increased consumer prices, and reduced competition in the industry if the merger were to proceed.
Oracle’s backing of Israel, including financial support and technology sharing, has been well-documented, with the company expressing unwavering solidarity with the country despite potential business implications.
The conflict between Israel and Gaza, triggered by a Hamas attack, resulted in significant casualties and ongoing tensions in the region, further fueling discussions on the implications of corporate partnerships in such sensitive geopolitical contexts.
