“Atari and Activision Reunite for Retro Gaming Revival”

Date:

As video gaming shifts towards a digital-first approach, the team behind the Atari brand is revisiting their past by reintroducing updated versions of their classic games from the 1980s.

During the recent Gamescom event in Germany, Atari Interactive disclosed a partnership with Activision to launch 39 games from Activision’s early catalog on physical cartridges. Titles like “Pitfall,” “River Raid,” and “Megamania” will be part of this release.

These games are compatible with the Atari 2600+, a modernized version of the original 2600 console released in 1977. The new console supports wireless controllers and can be connected to contemporary TVs via HDMI.

In 2023, the 2600+ was unveiled along with reissues of iconic games like “Pac-Man,” “Galaga,” and “Dig Dug.” Additionally, it can play original cartridges from the Atari 2600 and 7800 systems, provided enthusiasts can locate them and dust them off. The newly launched versions are also backward compatible, allowing them to be played on the original consoles if they are still functional.

According to Mike Mika, head of Digital Eclipse, a subsidiary of Atari, there is a persistent demand for these classic games. The collaboration with Activision holds significance as it marks a reunion after more than 40 years. Activision, initially formed in 1979 by former Atari programmers, has evolved into a major player in the gaming industry with franchises like “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush Saga.”

The Atari brand has experienced a turbulent journey since its glory days in the 1980s. Under various ownerships, including Luxembourg-based Atari SA, the brand underwent multiple transformations. In recent years, efforts have been made to revive the brand’s gaming division and realign it with its original essence.

Atari’s strategic acquisitions of studios like Nightdive Studios and Digital Eclipse have been pivotal. The introduction of the Atari 2600+ console and other hardware signifies a return to the brand’s roots and a renewed focus on retro gaming.

By engaging with former Atari collaborators and releasing nostalgic titles like the “Atari 50” compilation, Atari has aimed to regain the trust and affection of retro gaming enthusiasts. The collaboration with Activision has not only brought back classic games but also recreated fabric patches reminiscent of the past gaming era.

Amidst a digital-centric gaming landscape, Atari’s emphasis on physical media and nostalgia could attract a niche audience. With the gaming industry witnessing a shift towards digital-only releases, Atari’s commitment to preserving the tactile gaming experience resonates with gamers who appreciate physical collectibles.

As the younger generation shows a growing interest in physical media, Atari’s retro releases, complete with cartridges, box art, and manuals, are poised to appeal to a new wave of gamers seeking a tangible gaming experience akin to vinyl enthusiasts.
