Carney Rebukes U.S. Officials Over Disparaging Remarks

Date:

Prime Minister Mark Carney has responded to critical remarks made by U.S. cabinet members towards Canada and its military, calling the comments inappropriate and urging a more serious approach to trade negotiations. Carney’s comments came after U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent likened Canada’s navy to a former attraction at the West Edmonton Mall, and U.S. Transport Secretary Sean Duffy stated that Canada lacks a military.

Carney emphasized the need for a more respectful and constructive dialogue, criticizing the American officials for their disparaging remarks and lack of seriousness in discussions. He highlighted the importance of moving beyond provocative rhetoric and focusing on meaningful trade negotiations for both countries to progress.

Following the breakdown of trade talks on August 21, which led to the U.S. imposing tariffs on Canadian exports, Carney withdrew the Canadian negotiating team due to what he deemed as unfair demands that would restrict Canada’s trade flexibility and impact key industries negatively. He stressed that any agreement must respect Canada’s sovereignty and cultural values, emphasizing the need for mutual benefit and respect in trade deals.

Despite the challenges, Carney expressed hope for a potential deal with the U.S. that upholds Canadian interests. He reiterated Canada’s firm stance on protecting its core industries and cultural heritage, signaling a willingness to engage in constructive discussions to resolve trade disputes.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne is set to meet with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent to discuss trade issues further at the G20 finance ministers’ meeting. Champagne emphasized the importance of maintaining a serious yet constructive approach in negotiations, reaffirming Canada’s commitment to safeguarding its key sectors.

A recent Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that a majority of Americans oppose the increased tariffs on Canadian goods and the renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America.” The poll also indicated strong disapproval of these measures among American respondents, suggesting a lack of support for the U.S. administration’s trade tactics.
