“Comedians Struggle as SiriusXM Drops Raw Comedy Channel”

Date:

Comedian Liz Miele has recently experienced a significant drop in her earnings, mirroring the plight of many others in the industry. This decline comes as SiriusXM discontinues its Raw Comedy/Raw Dog channel, a platform that showcased over 800 comedians, to introduce a new channel spearheaded by renowned comedian Sebastian Maniscalco.

This move has left Miele and numerous working-class comedians without a crucial source of both income and visibility, as the spotlight now shifts to affluent celebrity comics. Miele, based in Los Angeles, disclosed to As It Happens host Nil Köksal that SiriusXM played a vital role in sustaining her financially during a challenging period.

While Maniscalco and SiriusXM have pledged to offer opportunities for comedians at various career stages, the actual statistics paint a different picture, according to industry advocacy group Stand Up for Standup. Before the transition, Raw Comedy regularly featured over 800 comedians monthly, each earning $15 in royalties per play. However, the revamped channel only showcased 275 comedians last month, with the top 50 artists, such as Chris Rock and Kevin Hart, dominating over 75% of the airtime.

Miele expressed her concern over this shift, emphasizing the previous diversity in earnings among comedians compared to the current concentration of wealth among a select few. She highlighted that the absence of platforms like SiriusXM could hinder aspiring comedians from breaking into the industry as successfully as Maniscalco did.

Canadian comedian Danish Anwar shared how the reduction in royalties from Raw Comedy has impacted his income and that of his peers, especially those relying on this revenue for work visas in the U.S. Anwar underscored the significance of these royalties, which were essential for many comics’ livelihoods and career progression.

Amidst calls from prominent comedians like Patton Oswalt and Michelle Wolf for more opportunities for emerging talents, Maniscalco clarified that he was not involved in the decision to discontinue Raw Comedy. SiriusXM cited performance issues as the reason for the channel’s closure and assured a commitment to supporting comedians at all stages of their careers on the new platform.

As comedians navigate this challenging landscape, solidarity within the industry becomes crucial. While the power dynamics may be shifting, the collective voice of comedians advocating for fair pay and industry practices could potentially bring about positive change in the future.
