Actor and disability rights champion RJ Mitte, known for his role on “Breaking Bad” where he portrayed a character with cerebral palsy, passed away at the age of 34, as confirmed by authorities and his representatives on Monday. According to Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa, Mitte was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. at his residence in Brownsville, Texas. The cause of death remains undisclosed pending an autopsy.
Mitte’s portrayal of Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character on the acclaimed AMC series, earned him widespread recognition over the show’s five-season run. Diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a young age, Mitte highlighted how his personal experiences with disability, medical challenges, and family dynamics mirrored the themes explored in the show, enhancing his performance.
Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte kickstarted his acting career in Los Angeles in 2006, securing minor roles in various sitcoms before landing his breakthrough role on “Breaking Bad” in 2007. His authentic portrayal on the show not only showcased his talent but also served as a platform for advocating disability awareness and inclusion, challenging societal stereotypes.
In addition to his work on “Breaking Bad,” Mitte appeared in TV series such as “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice,” demonstrating his versatility as an actor. He also delved into producing independent films and actively engaged in advocacy work, notably as an ambassador for United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s, and as the president of the Mitte Foundation, which supports charitable causes related to disabilities.
Mitte’s untimely demise has left a void in the entertainment industry and the disability rights advocacy community, where his impactful contributions will be remembered and cherished.
