“RCMP Conducts Intense Emergency Response Training”

Date:

A significant police presence was observed at a local high school and its surrounding area in Prince George, B.C., during a live emergency response training drill conducted by the RCMP this week. The training exercise, held at Duchess Park Secondary School, involved numerous uniformed and undercover officers, police vehicles, and armored vehicles, with actors simulating an active threat scenario to enhance realism and intensity for the participating police officers.

Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, the media relations officer for Prince George RCMP, noted that residents in the vicinity could expect to hear loud noises, shouting, and commotion as part of the dynamic simulation. She clarified that the training was not a direct response to the recent school shooting incident in Tumbler Ridge but rather a routine part of the ongoing RCMP training program.

The selection of the empty school building for the exercise was deliberate, taking advantage of the summer break to run various scenarios efficiently. Insp. Chris Riddle, the operations officer for Prince George RCMP, emphasized that the drill was a valuable opportunity for patrol and general duty officers to experience real-life scenarios and make critical decisions under pressure.

The training scenarios were designed to prepare officers to handle situations where individuals pose a threat to others, ensuring they can identify and neutralize threats effectively. Cooper shared her experience of participating in similar training exercises before becoming a police officer, highlighting the importance of understanding the challenges faced by law enforcement personnel on a daily basis.

Looking ahead, Riddle expressed the intention to organize more live-action training events for Prince George officers, aiming to provide comprehensive training and continuous development opportunities for the team. He emphasized the rewarding nature of such exercises and the positive impact they have on the professional growth and preparedness of the officers involved.
