In recent times, a notable amount of British citizens have opted to move from the UK to Australia. By the conclusion of 2024, the population of British expatriates had risen to 50,000, a significant increase from 31,000 in 2023, predominantly comprising younger individuals embarking on the extensive journey to the other side of the world.

However, the trend is not limited to the younger demographic. Tony Kenefeck, aged 69, and his spouse Daria have relocated to Melbourne to be closer to their grandchildren.

Facilitated by a contributory aged parent visa, and with two of their three children already settled in Australia for work, they successfully made the transition, albeit without permanent residency status in the country.

The couple shared their surprise at the cost discrepancies in Australia. Tony, 69, mentioned to the Telegraph, “You certainly get more value for money here. We anticipated it to be much pricier than the UK – however, TV subscriptions are half the price, petrol costs less, along with electricity and gas.”

Data from globalpetrolprices.com indicates that the average petrol price in Australia currently stands at 78p/litre, significantly lower than the UK’s £1.33/litre average.

Moreover, while the average monthly electricity and gas bill in the UK is around £154, Australian costs can dip as low as £95, according to Meenz.

Although various daily expenses are cheaper in Australia compared to the UK, Tony noted that property prices are higher, particularly in Sydney where average house prices surpass those in London.

He also expressed surprise at the unpredictable climate, especially during bitter winters along the southern coast, exacerbated by the absence of insulation, double glazing, or central heating.

Nevertheless, the couple is relishing their new beginning in Australia. Tony added, “Making the decision to move isn’t easy due to strict immigration policies, but the living experience here is fantastic. So far, I haven’t encountered any major drawbacks.”

Despite these observations, a considerable number of people are still taking the bold step to relocate to Australia.

Recent data disclosed that approximately 50,000 individuals migrated to Australia last year, up from 31,000 the year before, as reported by the Independent.

This surge could be partly attributed to the relaxed working holiday visa regulations, allowing individuals up to 35 years old to explore and work in Australia for up to three years.

Furthermore, while these travelers gain valuable exposure to Australia and decide on their long-term plans in the warmer climate, local authorities acknowledge the economic benefits for Australia as well.

Former deputy secretary at the Department of Immigration, Abdul Rizvi, speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, pointed out, “They are a valuable source of inexpensive labor in regions facing labor shortages, and they often spend their earnings in local economies.”

He further added, “In the evenings, they might work as a bartender. In the mornings, they could be off on a snorkeling adventure in the Barrier Reef. They are truly advantageous.”
