Israel has intensified its attacks on Gaza, leading to widespread destruction in the besieged city overnight. Reports from local journalists in Gaza City confirm relentless artillery and aerial strikes, with unverified claims suggesting the Israeli Defence Force has initiated a ground offensive to seize control of the port town.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz took to Twitter to declare that “Gaza is burning” as the IDF targets Hamas’ infrastructure, emphasizing the mission to secure the release of hostages and defeat Hamas.

Ahead of the ground strike, the IDF advised innocent Palestinian civilians in Gaza to seek refuge in humanitarian areas while troops prepared for the operation. Despite ongoing airstrikes, the military is now planning to deploy Israeli forces into enemy territory to eliminate the designated terror group.

Amid the escalating conflict, a United Nations inquiry has accused Israel of committing genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza, citing multiple genocidal acts outlined in international law. The report highlights instances where Israel allegedly caused harm to individuals, inflicted conditions aimed at destroying specific groups, and hindered population growth.

Israel has refuted these claims, labeling the report as “distorted and false” and accusing the UN experts of bias towards Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry contends that Hamas, not Israel, has engaged in genocidal actions, including targeting civilians and advocating for the destruction of Jewish people.

International pressure mounts on Jerusalem regarding the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, exacerbated by a declared famine in August. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains steadfast in his efforts to dismantle Hamas and secure the release of hostages, despite calls for de-escalation to prevent further civilian casualties.

As the conflict intensifies, with tanks and troops entering Gaza, casualties are expected to rise. Former U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed concern over the safety of hostages, warning Hamas against using human shields. Netanyahu, in response, appreciates Trump’s support in combating Hamas and rescuing captives.

Since the initiation of Israel’s offensive nearly two years ago, an estimated 65,000 Palestinians, primarily women and children, have been reported killed by the Gaza Health Ministry, which is controlled by Hamas. Despite opposition from some security officials, Netanyahu authorized the offensive, weighing the risks of potential civilian deaths and long-term governance challenges.

Ahead of the ground offensive, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged in discussions with Netanyahu, emphasizing the need to address the violent nature of Hamas. Trump’s backing for the military operation was acknowledged, with a desire to swiftly conclude the offensive.

Reports indicate that around twenty hostages remain under Hamas control in Gaza City, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the region.
