The United Kingdom’s Prime Minister has announced the deployment of RAF Typhoon jets to Poland as part of NATO’s “Eastern Sentry” mission in response to what is described as Russia’s escalating aggression.
During an interview with Channel 4 News, Sir Keir Starmer stated that the UK will provide additional air defense support over Poland following recent incidents where Russian drones breached Polish airspace and were subsequently intercepted by Polish and NATO aircraft.
Starmer emphasized the importance of not ignoring the heightened aggression from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government, referencing recent events such as the bombing of the British Council in Kyiv and attacks on diplomatic buildings.
RAF Typhoon jets from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire will participate in NATO’s mission in Poland, working alongside aircraft from Denmark, France, and Germany. The UK’s Defence Secretary, John Healey, affirmed the country’s commitment to bolstering NATO’s eastern flank defense.
Following drone incursions last week, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed concerns over the escalating tensions, warning that the situation has brought the region to the brink of conflict not seen since World War Two.
In response to the airspace violations, the UK Foreign Office summoned Russia’s ambassador in London to condemn the actions as unacceptable. The UK reiterated its support for NATO allies and Ukraine and warned Russia against further aggressive actions.
The UK previously deployed six RAF Typhoon jets in Poland between April and July as part of NATO’s enhanced air policing mission, working in collaboration with other alliance members to ensure regional security.
