The leading suspect linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann was observed donning a fake beard as an attempt to conceal his identity.
Christian Brueckner was sighted wearing the disguise while strolling in the German town where he has taken up residence since his recent release from prison. He utilized the false beard to mask his face while requesting food at a pizza shop on Friday night, explaining to a staff member that he had just been released from jail and lacked the means to pay.
A witness at the shop described the fake beard as synthetic material, not resembling natural hair, and of a different color than his hair. The witness also mentioned Brueckner’s peculiar behavior, likening him to a stray dog, and how they eventually recognized him as the suspect in the Madeleine case.
The woman further recounted Brueckner’s return to the shop on Sunday without the false beard, only to be swiftly escorted out by staff. In an earlier interview, Brueckner’s lawyer disclosed the suspect’s contemplation of altering his appearance to evade recognition, citing financial constraints as a hindrance to more drastic changes like plastic surgery.
Reports indicated that Brueckner’s attempt to remain incognito in his new residence was thwarted when he was recognized by women at a local shop, prompting a commotion. Previously residing in a dilapidated farmhouse near Praia da Luz during Madeleine’s disappearance, he is now reported to be housed in a private flat provided by the German authorities.
Following his release, Brueckner was relocated to emergency housing after declaring himself homeless, with concerns for his safety leading to a change in his accommodation. As part of his release conditions, he is mandated to wear an ankle monitor for five years and risks re-incarceration if he violates any bail terms, such as moving residences without notifying probation officials.
Despite ongoing investigations, authorities have not made significant progress in charging Brueckner in connection to Madeleine’s case, an assertion he vehemently denies. While acquitted of previous sex offense allegations in Portugal, pending appeals could potentially overturn these decisions. Additionally, Brueckner is facing a court appearance next month for charges related to disrespecting a prison officer, with potential fines pending.
