Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood fell short of the £1.1 million top prize at the Abu Dhabi Championship, which ended in a thrilling play-off victory for Aaron Rai. The tournament marked the first of the DP World Tour Play-off events, intensifying as the Race to Dubai nears its conclusion.

European Ryder Cup stars showcased their skills at Yas Links, with Fleetwood narrowly missing out in the play-off and McIlroy securing a joint third-place finish. The Abu Dhabi Championship, classified as a Play-off event, boasted an increased prize pool totaling nearly £7 million.

Fleetwood claimed just over £750,000 for his efforts, while McIlroy shared a £752,000 prize with Nicolai Højgaard for finishing third and fourth respectively. Despite starting the final round six shots behind leader Rai, McIlroy’s exceptional round of 62 propelled him back into contention, although it fell short of victory.

The competition intensified as McIlroy finished at 24 under, leading to a dramatic play-off between Fleetwood and Rai tied at 25 under after sinking crucial putts on the 17th hole. Rai seized the opportunity to win the title, sinking a birdie putt after Fleetwood could only manage a par, pushing the tournament into extra holes.

In the ensuing play-off, both players had birdie opportunities, with Rai converting his putt to clinch the top prize after Fleetwood missed his chance. Rai expressed his elation post-victory, emphasizing the focus and determination that led to his triumph.

Reflecting on his performance, Rai credited his caddie for providing crucial guidance during challenging moments, highlighting a pivotal up-and-down on the 15th hole that boosted his confidence heading into the closing stretch.

The Race to Dubai will culminate with the DP World Tour Championship commencing on November 13.
