A mother of two tragically passed away shortly after denouncing controversial housing plans, with actor Sean Bean joining the cause. Sapphire McCarthy, a dedicated activist, spearheaded the opposition against the contentious proposals. In a heartfelt video, she vehemently criticized the plans before her sudden death the same evening. Supporters, deeply affected by her loss, have vowed to persist in their advocacy efforts.

The video, released before a crucial local plan hearing, showcased Sapphire’s passionate plea for the preservation of the S13 greenbelt area. She highlighted the disregard for the voices of numerous residents opposing the Sheffield City Council’s development plans. The proposed construction would encroach upon vital green spaces, depriving communities of essential benefits like clean air and natural surroundings.

In honor of Sapphire, the group has been renamed “Save S13 Greenbelt – The Sapphire McCarthy Campaign.” Their battle commenced in response to the council’s propositions for two extensive housing projects, threatening wildlife habitats in Woodhouse and Stradbroke. Sean Bean, a prominent supporter of the cause, lauded Sapphire as a courageous advocate and emphasized the importance of resistance against unjust developments.

Despite the profound loss of their leader, campaigners remain resolute in continuing the fight she initiated. They are determined to uphold Sapphire’s legacy by presenting their concerns to government inspectors. Expressing disappointment in the council’s lack of transparency and consultation, the group aims to challenge the flawed decision-making process and ensure community interests are safeguarded.

With over 4,000 signatures and £10,000 raised for legal actions, the campaign has garnered significant support. Through a dedicated website and fundraising efforts, they aim to keep residents informed and engaged in their ongoing battle for environmental protection and community well-being.
