In northeastern Alberta, researchers are tackling copper deficiencies in cattle by applying the mineral to wheat crops. This deficiency can impact the animals’ fertility and overall health. At the same time, they are experimenting with various cover crops to determine which ones effectively suppress weeds, potentially reducing the need for herbicides.

Jay Cory, a farmer and chair of the Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA), emphasized how research sparks new ideas and approaches. LARA, a non-profit organization serving the region, conducts various studies at its Fort Kent research field, situated about 250 kilometers northeast of Edmonton.

Producers from the area recently had the opportunity to explore the facility and observe the 10 ongoing trials, focusing on enhancing productivity and sustainability through research on crop varieties and practices.

Maria Angelica Ouellette, a research scientist at LARA, highlighted the importance of testing ideas in real-world conditions, including factors like precipitation and temperature fluctuations. She mentioned that farmer inquiries shape the research agenda, aiming to assist growers in achieving sustainable and productive crops on their lands.

This year’s trials face the additional challenge of unusually wet weather, affecting crop performance. The producer-led program ensures that research aligns with local needs, leveraging the insights of those intimately familiar with the land.

Alyssa Krawchuk, the executive director of LARA, stressed the significance of tailoring research to the specific climatic conditions of the region. The organization aims to minimize risks for farmers by conducting unbiased local research and disseminating findings through events like field tours.

Jay Cory emphasized the importance of balancing costs with solutions, highlighting the need to assess how new approaches impact yields. For Neil Cory, a veteran farmer and original director of LARA, having a research facility in the region reduces the risk associated with adopting new products or techniques.

By providing a platform for testing and showcasing innovative agricultural practices, LARA plays a crucial role in advancing farming methods and mitigating risks for local producers.
