Argos is now offering a popular alternative to Sky Q-style upgrades with the introduction of the Manhattan S4-R set-top box. This device, launched recently, provides similar features to Sky’s premium service, allowing users to record shows, pause live TV, and store content on its internal hard drive.
One significant difference is the pricing model. While Sky Q requires a monthly fee, the Manhattan S4-R offers access to over 100 channels without any ongoing payments. Utilizing Freesat technology, the S4-R taps into free TV channels using an existing satellite dish, including popular channels like BBC, ITV1, Channel 4, E4, and more.
Manhattan emphasizes the user-friendly design of the S4-R, equipped with a simple interface, search functionalities, and access to a vast library of on-demand content. Supported apps include BBC iPlayer, ITVX, Channel 4, and My5.
Although the S4-R does not match Sky Q in premium sports and movie offerings, it stands out for being completely free to watch. The 500GB model of the Manhattan S4-R is currently available at retailers like Argos and Amazon for £219.99, with larger 1TB and 2TB versions on the horizon. Demand for the device is high, with Argos reporting it as “in demand” and “selling fast.”
Manhattan’s COO, Alex Arbab-Zadeh, highlighted the enhanced recording capabilities of the S4-R, allowing up to four simultaneous recordings, compared to the previous two-channel limit. He positioned the S4-R as an attractive option for households seeking an affordable alternative to subscription TV services, offering more flexibility and choice.
In a similar vein, the Pleio puck has also entered the market as a competitor to traditional TV providers, providing access to over 50 live channels via the internet without the need for an aerial. After initial stock shortages, the Pleio puck is now back in stock, priced at £99.99 and includes a gaming controller along with access to over 200 online games.
Sky has recently announced a 20 percent price reduction ahead of the upcoming World Cup, with prices for the Sky Glass Air TV starting from £4.50 per month. Customers interested in the upgraded Sky Glass Gen 2 model, featuring a 4K Quantum Dot display and built-in Dolby Atmos soundbar, can expect to pay from £11 per month.
