Arrest Made in Scarborough MP Residence Car Fires

Date:

A suspect has been taken into custody following a series of car fires at the residence of a Member of Parliament (MP) in Scarborough last week, according to Toronto law enforcement. Roshvin Crofton, 24, was apprehended on Sunday and faces multiple charges, including arson causing property damage, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit a serious offense, possession of flammable materials, and violation of probation terms. Authorities disclosed this information in a press release issued on Friday.

Additionally, a 2025 Hyundai Sonata linked to the incident was impounded. Investigators are seeking details about the vehicle’s whereabouts leading up to the alleged arson. Police are also on the lookout for a second individual believed to be involved.

The incident transpired in the driveway of Liberal MP Salma Zahid’s household. Zahid, who represents the Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East federal constituency, expressed gratitude towards law enforcement for the arrest but noted that the motive behind the attack remains unknown. She emphasized the importance of awaiting further details before making additional comments on the situation.

On August 27th, an unidentified assailant approached the parked vehicles and set two of them ablaze using an accelerant before fleeing the scene. A third vehicle sustained damage from the flames, as per authorities.

Zahid, a member of the Liberal Party serving as an MP since 2015, chairs the standing committee on science and research and holds the vice-chair position in the Canada-China legislative association. The incident prompted widespread condemnation from various political figures, including Prime Minister Mark Carney, who denounced the act as a “cowardly display of violence and intimidation.”
