BBC boxing analyst Steve Bunce expressed deep sorrow following the tragic passing of Ricky Hatton on Radio 5 Live shortly after receiving the news. Hatton, aged 46, was discovered deceased at his residence in Hyde on Sunday.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed the finding of a body and clarified that they are not treating the death as suspicious. Bunce shared his sentiments on the radio from a hotel in Northern Ireland, following his attendance at a fight between Lewis Crocker and Paddy Donovan.
In a heartfelt on-air discussion, host Steve Crossman repeatedly checked on Bunce’s emotional state as he paid tribute while visibly affected. Bunce reflected on Hatton’s journey, acknowledging his struggles with mental health and addiction, which he courageously confronted and resolved.
Hatton, who would have turned 47 in October, had openly discussed his battles with mental health and substance abuse. Despite surviving suicide attempts, he managed to mend his relationships with his family after addressing his mental health challenges.
Bunce further remarked that given Hatton’s past struggles and openness about his mental health, the news of his sudden demise was truly shocking. Tributes poured in from the boxing community, with former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell honoring Hatton’s legacy and impact in the sport.
Survived by his children Millie, Fearne, and Campbell, as well as granddaughter Lyla, Hatton leaves behind a lasting legacy in the boxing world.
