Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has called for Prince Andrew to be evicted from his residence in Windsor and to retreat from the public eye, citing public discontent with the royal figure. Jenrick expressed his belief that Prince Andrew’s presence has brought shame upon both his family and the nation, emphasizing the taxpayer-funded luxury living arrangement at a 30-room mansion shared with his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson.

Pressure has intensified on Prince Andrew to vacate the Royal Lodge estate, where he has resided for over two decades under a nominal rent agreement, following his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Jenrick urged Prince Andrew to relocate to a private residence, stating that the public has grown weary of his actions tarnishing the royal family’s reputation and questioning the taxpayer’s ongoing support for him.

Official documents from the Crown Estate reveal that Prince Andrew secured a 75-year lease on the Royal Lodge in 2003, making a substantial upfront payment of £1 million. Subsequently, he has paid a symbolic annual rent of one peppercorn as stipulated in the lease agreement. Additionally, Prince Andrew invested £7.5 million in renovations for the Grade II-listed property in 2005, with the lease entitling him to potential compensation from the Crown Estate upon surrendering the estate.

Jenrick criticized the idea of taxpayers continuing to subsidize Prince Andrew’s opulent lifestyle and emphasized the need for accountability in the management of public funds. The situation has raised concerns among Members of Parliament, with committees expected to scrutinize the handling of the lease agreement to ensure transparency and accountability.

Dame Meg Hillier, chair of the Treasury Committee, stressed the importance of parliamentary oversight in cases involving taxpayer money to safeguard public interests. Liberal Democrat Cabinet Office spokesperson Lisa Smart called for Prince Andrew to repay any outstanding rent owed as a gesture of contrition for his past actions.

The controversy surrounding Prince Andrew’s living arrangements comes in the wake of his decision to relinquish his Duke of York title and military distinctions amid renewed scrutiny over his connections to Jeffrey Epstein. These developments coincide with the publication of Virginia Giuffre’s memoir, which contains allegations against Prince Andrew that he vehemently denies, maintaining his innocence in the face of serious accusations.
