The legendary figure known as The Mighty Sparrow, credited with popularizing calypso music worldwide from the 1950s onwards, has passed away at the age of 91.
The iconic musician, whose real name was Slinger Francisco, peacefully departed in New York surrounded by his loved ones, following a brief illness, as confirmed by his family. Renowned for his talent as a singer, songwriter, and mentor, Francisco was a respected figure in the entertainment industry, cherished by many.
Hailing from Grand Roy, Grenada, Francisco migrated to Trinidad and Tobago with his parents at a young age in 1937. Trinidad and Tobago, the birthplace of calypso music, played a pivotal role in shaping the persona and success of The Mighty Sparrow, who went on to produce a string of popular hits in the genre, including tracks like “Jean and Dinah,” “Both of Them,” “Congo Man,” “Mr. Walker,” and “The Lizard.”
The Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, Kamla Persad Bissessar, paid tribute to The Mighty Sparrow, acknowledging his significant impact on the nation’s cultural landscape. The artist’s contributions were recognized through various accolades, including national awards and an honorary Doctor of Letters degree conferred by the University of the West Indies in 1987.
