Two Canadian researchers have been honored in a worldwide image competition showcasing ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition recognized 11 photographs from researchers worldwide at different career stages. These images capture animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and other natural scenes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick, won the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” The image was taken while Brennan supervised undergraduate students conducting a long-term fish monitoring project in St. Andrews, N.B. The photo captures the students in action, dragging a seine net onto the shore at night under the bright full moon, showcasing their curiosity and dedication to their research.

Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University and Chinese universities, won the “protecting our planet” category with his image called “A bridge between past and present.” The photo is a composite of 33 drone images of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, illustrating the impact of human activities on ecosystems and the importance of conservation efforts.

Both researchers emphasized the significance of using images to communicate their research and engage the public in ecological issues. Brennan highlighted the role of images in building public trust and showcasing the value of environmental education and ecological research, while Tian emphasized the power of photography in fostering natural empathy and connecting people to the environment.

Through their compelling images, these researchers aim to raise awareness about the importance of ecological research and conservation efforts, inspiring others to appreciate and protect the natural world.
