Halifax regional councillor representing Bedford-Wentworth, Jean St-Amand, has received feedback from residents expressing concerns about the police notification process regarding an armed individual in the area during the weekend. St-Amand mentioned in an interview on CBC Radio’s “Information Morning” that some locals had posted about the situation on social media before the official alert was issued.
Over the weekend, an emergency alert was issued in Bedford, N.S., advising residents to secure their homes as law enforcement searched for the man following a shooting incident in the Annapolis Valley. A subsequent alert with wider coverage was sent out 30 minutes later, leading to the man’s eventual arrest.
The suspect, identified as Ryan Alexander Cole, appeared briefly in Digby provincial court on Monday, with his case adjourned until August 25 while he remains in custody.
St-Amand expressed interest in debriefing with the city’s chief administrative officer to review the sequence of events related to the emergency alert on Saturday. He highlighted the need to understand the coordination between the alert system and responding officers, acknowledging that such situations may involve local awareness preceding official alerts.
According to Cpl. Mandy Edwards of the RCMP, alerts are tailored based on several factors, with the initial alert being localized due to the suspect being on foot after abandoning his vehicle. Edwards emphasized that alerts aim to inform and provide guidance when necessary, noting limitations in character space for detailed descriptions. Additionally, she mentioned the use of social media and traditional news releases by law enforcement to disseminate information.
