Cricket legends gathered to honor the late Dickie Bird during his funeral procession in Barnsley, Yorkshire. Notable figures like Sir Geoffrey Boycott and Michael Vaughan paid their respects to the renowned umpire, who passed away at 92 on September 22.

Sir Geoffrey shared heartfelt memories of his long-time friend Dickie, highlighting their bond that spanned nearly seven decades. He recounted humorous anecdotes, shedding light on Dickie’s quirky yet fair nature as an umpire.

The funeral service featured touching moments, including a reading of a poem by Barnsley poet Ian McMillan and the solemn rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” as Dickie’s coffin exited the church. The gathering included various sports personalities such as Martyn Moxon and Colin Graves, alongside political representatives like Richard Caborn and Stephanie Peacock.

Born in 1933 in Barnsley, Dickie’s legacy as an umpire overshadowed his playing career at Yorkshire and Leicestershire. Remembered for his humility and unique character, Dickie’s funeral celebrated his roots as a proud son of Barnsley.

The service, guided by Rev Phil Maries, reflected Dickie’s pre-planned arrangements, emphasizing his pride in representing Barnsley worldwide. Fondly remembered for his approachability and friendly demeanor, Dickie’s presence in the town center will be dearly missed.

Colleagues like Chris Edmondson and Colin Graves shared amusing anecdotes about Dickie’s sense of humor and generosity, highlighting his impact beyond the cricket field. His philanthropic efforts, supporting numerous young talents, including England international Harry Brook, showcased his enduring legacy.

The funeral concluded with a private wake at Barnsley Town Hall, commemorating Dickie’s life and contributions to the cricketing community.
