Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad residing in Toronto, shares his experience preparing for and participating in the Masters of Musical Whistling competition in Los Angeles. His journey began with a casual mention of an international whistling contest on a quiz show, leading him to sign up himself and his daughter, Sumire, for the event. Initially viewing it as a lighthearted activity, Shannon soon realized the competition’s seriousness as they made the cut.
After receiving coaching from Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as the Whistling Diva, Shannon and Sumire dedicated themselves to daily practice sessions in preparation for the in-person competition. The event, held in Hollywood, showcased remarkable whistling talents from around the world. Shannon recounts the surreal experience of meeting fellow contestants and witnessing their impressive performances.
Despite his past tendency towards irony, Shannon embraced the competition wholeheartedly, performing alongside Sumire and winning awards in their respective categories. Reflecting on the experience, Shannon acknowledges the significance of genuinely caring about something and the value of stepping out of his ironic shell to pursue what truly matters.
