Michael Smith was overcome with emotion during a recent interview as he made a poignant comeback to the competitive darts scene after grappling with significant health challenges. The reigning 2023 world champion marked his television tournament return by squaring off against Nathan Aspinall at the prestigious Grand Slam of Darts event.

In a rematch of their 2022 final showdown in Wolverhampton, Smith, also known as Bullyboy, clinched a hard-fought 5-3 victory as Aspinall faltered, missing crucial opportunities at double. The triumph held special significance for Smith, who has valiantly battled multiple health issues, including arthritis in his throwing hand, foot, ankle, and shoulder, along with undergoing corrective eye surgery.

For the St Helens native, stepping back into the spotlight held immense personal significance, prompting an emotional interview with Viaplay before withdrawing from the standard winners’ press conference to prioritize his well-being. Reflecting on his tumultuous journey, Smith expressed gratitude for overcoming obstacles, emphasizing the significance of his recent win.

Commenting on his performance, Smith acknowledged the challenges he faced during the match, recognizing Aspinall’s missed opportunities and crediting his own perseverance for securing the win. Despite the setbacks he has encountered in recent months, Smith highlighted his resilient spirit, underscoring his determination to compete and succeed on the grand stage once more.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Smith expressed a deep desire to be back in the competitive arena, lamenting missed opportunities while reaffirming his commitment to excelling in the sport. Refusing to entertain thoughts of quitting, the former world No.1 highlighted past triumphs over adversity, emphasizing his unwavering fighting spirit and determination to bounce back stronger.

Looking ahead, Smith is set to face off against current world No.1 Luke Humphries and Alex Spellman in his remaining Grand Slam matches, with the top two players in the group advancing to the knockout stage.
