A powerful tornado swept through the village of Pomas in southern France, causing extensive damage to over 300 homes and injuring numerous individuals. Thankfully, no one has been reported missing in the aftermath of the disaster.
According to the Aude prefecture, as of Tuesday morning, approximately 1,400 households remained without electricity. The tornado was captured swirling above the village of Verzeille, located just a few kilometers east of Pomas, late Monday. Numerous homes in its path suffered shattered windows as a result of the intense winds.
Pictures obtained from social media and verified by Reuters show the tornado moving through Preixan, situated a few kilometers north of Pomas, further illustrating the destructive path it carved through the region.
In the cleanup and assessment phase, a man is seen amidst the wreckage of a damaged house in Pomas. Debris litters the floor of the Saint Julien et Sainte Basilisse church after its roof collapsed due to the tornado. Fallen trees now dot the cemetery in Pomas, adding to the aftermath’s solemn scene.
Efforts are underway to cover the damaged roofs of buildings with tarps in Pomas as individuals work to restore some semblance of normalcy. Pedestrians navigate the area, passing by a fallen tree and damaged homes, showcasing the resilience of the community in the face of such devastation.
