Italy, known for its culinary delights and the famous dolce vita lifestyle, offers a diverse landscape ranging from picturesque cities to serene lakes and beautiful beaches. While popular destinations like Florence, Rome, and Venice attract many visitors, the southern region of Calabria often goes unnoticed despite its stunning beauty.
Situated at the southern tip of Italy, Calabria boasts a unique charm with its pristine coastline featuring azure blue waters and sandy beaches. Inland, a traditional way of life prevails, characterized by historic churches and monasteries at the heart of local communities.
Noteworthy places in Calabria include the enchanting town of Tropea, recently acclaimed as the most picturesque town in Italy, and the quaint fishing village of Scilla. Reggio Calabria, the largest city in the region, stands out as a must-visit destination. The city’s Lungomare Falcomatà, a seafront promenade, offers breathtaking views of the sea, the Strait of Messina, Sicily, and Mount Etna on clear days.
Along the promenade, visitors can admire impressive sculptures and elegant buildings while strolling by the sea. Despite encountering rainy weather during a visit to Reggio Calabria, which affected the visibility of the scenic views, the charm of the city and its historical treasures like the Riace Bronzes in the National Archaeological Museum left a lasting impression.
Although the weather dampened the experience, it only serves as a reason to revisit the captivating region of Calabria in the future.
