Eland Cables, a company providing electrical cables for major projects, has taken the initiative to increase its employees’ wages earlier than planned. This pay boost, known as the Real Living Wage, is a voluntary measure aimed at ensuring workers over 18 receive fair compensation based on the cost of living essentials.
The hourly rate under the Real Living Wage is set to increase by 85p to £13.45 per hour nationwide and by 95p to £14.80 per hour in London. This raise surpasses the minimum wage requirements set by law. Currently, there are more than 16,000 employers committed to implementing the Real Living Wage for their workforce.
Despite the deadline for these higher rates being set for May 2026, Eland Cables has decided to introduce the pay raise ahead of schedule. Ben, a 34-year-old employee at Eland Cables and a father of two, expressed his appreciation for the early wage increase, noting that it will alleviate financial burdens, especially with Christmas approaching.
JS Pelland, the executive director of Eland Cables, emphasized that the decision to implement the Real Living Wage early aligns with the company’s values of fairness, loyalty, and sustainable success. Pelland highlighted the importance of treating employees well to enhance engagement, pride in work, and overall performance.
Eland Cables has witnessed a significant improvement in staff retention, reduced sickness absence, and increased productivity since adopting the Living Wage Plus policy in 2021. By prioritizing internal growth opportunities and fostering a sense of belonging among employees, the company has seen remarkable progress and success in its operations.
