An elderly British couple who were held captive in Afghanistan for nearly eight months have been released. Barbie Reynolds, aged 76, and her husband Peter, aged 80, were detained by the Taliban while traveling to their home in Bamyan Province back in February. The circumstances leading to their detention remain unclear.
Following mediation by Qatar, the couple has been freed and is currently being flown to Doha. A Qatari official mentioned that the couple, who have resided in Afghanistan for almost twenty years, will undergo medical evaluations before continuing their journey to the UK. During the final stages of negotiations, they were transferred from Kabul’s central prison to a larger facility.
In a previous appeal in July, their son Jonathan Reynolds expressed urgent concerns about his parents’ declining health and stressed the need for their immediate release. He revealed that they had been detained without any formal charges and were kept separated in a high-security prison.
