Former Manchester United player Alejandro Garnacho scored his debut goal for Chelsea against Sunderland on Saturday, showcasing a celebration that highlighted the changes in his career over the past 20 months.
Having made a £40 million move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, Garnacho’s goal celebration, along with teammate Pedro Neto, mirrored a similar gesture during his time at United. The celebration, which took place during a game against West Ham in February 2024, involved Garnacho, Kobbie Mainoo, and Rasmus Hojlund, and was perceived by some as a slight towards former West Ham player Mohammed Kudus.
Initially hailed as the future of United, Garnacho and Hojlund have since departed the club, with Mainoo yet to secure a starting spot this season. The swift changes in football were evident as their paths diverged, and their former manager Erik ten Hag faced job losses at both United and Bayer Leverkusen.
Garnacho’s departure from United was accelerated by his reaction to being benched for the Europa League final, where he publicly criticized manager Ruben Amorim. Despite the turbulent exit, Garnacho expressed no ill will towards United, emphasizing his contentment at Chelsea.
Reflecting on his time, Garnacho acknowledged the challenging period at United but expressed gratitude for his current opportunity at Chelsea. The player’s positive outlook and focus on his current endeavors were evident in his remarks, underscoring his commitment to moving forward in his career.
