Police were puzzled by reports of a crocodile sighting in a canal in the UK, sparking a frantic search. The unusual incident occurred at the Trent and Mersey canal, close to the Mercia Marina in Willington. Derbyshire Constabulary launched an unprecedented appeal due to concerns for public safety.

The sighting of the large reptile came to light when an angler fishing along the canal noticed something unusual in the water. Upon closer inspection, the angler discovered what seemed to be a 3ft-long crocodile. The angler placed the seemingly lifeless reptile on the towpath between bridges 22 and 22A, where a passer-by later spotted it. Alarmed by the sight of what appeared to be a live crocodile abandoned on the canal bank, the passer-by took a photo and alerted the police. However, by the time law enforcement arrived, the ‘creature’ had vanished.

In response to fears of a potential predator on the loose, Derbyshire Constabulary issued an unprecedented appeal and sought assistance from the Canal and River Trust. The situation took a surprising turn when a local fisherman clarified to the police that the crocodile was not real but a taxidermy model filled with hay. The model had inadvertently been caught while fishing and left on the bank. Police later confirmed that there was no threat, reassuring the public via social media that the incident was “more fluff than fear.”

In a light-hearted tone, the police quipped that dealing with a crocodile in Derbyshire was not an everyday occurrence. They expressed gratitude to everyone who shared the appeal and revealed that the mystery had been solved. The public came forward to explain that the crocodile was a stuffed taxidermy model, bringing the amusing misunderstanding to an end. The police commended the public for their support, shares, and good humor throughout the incident.
