Donald Trump’s move to restart nuclear testing has been criticized as illogical by a former Navy officer, who cautioned about the potential dire consequences of such actions. Anthony Cowden, a retired naval officer with 37 years of service, expressed concerns over the possibility of escalating tensions if the US resumes nuclear testing, leading other nations to follow suit and reigniting a nuclear arms race.
Cowden emphasized that there is no clear justification for recommencing nuclear testing, as no other country, including North Korea, is actively conducting such tests. He argued that the US military does not require actual detonations to test nuclear weapons effectively. Furthermore, Cowden warned that unilateral testing by the US could trigger a chain reaction among other nations, posing a negative impact on global security.
Stari Consulting’s Anthony, along with others like James Ball from The New World, has criticized Trump’s decision, highlighting the dangerous consequences of unchallenged “delusions” within the administration. Trump defended the resumption of nuclear testing, citing the need for the US to keep up with countries like Russia and China in terms of military capabilities.
With the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty set to expire in 2026, tensions between the US and Russia are on the rise, raising concerns about the future of nuclear arms control. The treaty, which limited both countries to 1,550 warheads, is crucial for maintaining stability in the nuclear landscape. The cancellation of a summit between Trump and Putin has further strained relations, fueling fears of a new era of instability in nuclear affairs.
