Role-playing games (RPGs) are often known for their extensive completion times. Depending on whether players choose to engage in all side quests, games like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 can require well over 100 hours to fully explore.
Bethesda’s RPGs, such as Fallout 4 and Skyrim, demand significant time investment for completion, with estimates of 160 and 257 hours respectively on How Long to Beat . However, there are indications that the developers at Bethesda have even more ambitious plans for their future Fallout project, with one team member suggesting that Fallout 5 could offer gameplay lasting up to 600 hours.
During an interview with Game Informer , studio design director Emil Pagliarulo shared his vision for the next Fallout game’s success. He expressed the desire to create an immersive experience that could captivate players for hundreds of hours, ranging from 200 to even 600 hours, emphasizing the studio’s commitment to crafting extensive gaming experiences.

The duration of video games often sparks discussions, particularly surrounding the release of new RPGs, known for their lengthy gameplay. Dying Light 2 faced criticism in 2021 when Techland initially claimed a 500-hour completion time for 100% achievement, later clarifying that the main storyline actually takes around 20 hours to complete.
While extensive game content can offer value for money, rising game prices and hardware costs have made such games more expensive. However, not everyone can dedicate 600 hours to a single game, potentially limiting their ability to experience other games released throughout the year.
Bethesda seems inclined to provide players with the option of enjoying hundreds of hours of gameplay in Fallout 5, rather than making the main storyline a 600-hour endeavor, aligning with the player’s choice.
