Pop icon Gary Glitter has seen a significant increase in his wealth over the past year despite facing bankruptcy. The 80-year-old, who has been embroiled in scandal due to his past actions, has failed to pay £508,000 in damages ordered by the High Court to a woman he sexually assaulted when she was just 12 years old. Legal action taken by her representatives at Slater and Gordon has resulted in Glitter’s bankruptcy.
Recent filings at Companies House reveal that a company established by Glitter, now managed by his associates, has seen its assets rise to over £155,000 for the year 2024, up from £125,626 in 2023. The company has managed to clear the mortgage on Glitter’s residence in Baker Street, Central London.
Despite his legal troubles, Glitter continues to earn royalties while serving time in prison. Richard Scorer, head of abuse law at Slater and Gordon, confirmed that Glitter has been declared bankrupt and criticized his lack of cooperation and disrespect towards his victims.
In a statement, Scorer expressed hope that Glitter’s behavior would be taken into consideration by the parole board in any future release applications, highlighting the lack of remorse and ongoing risk he poses to the public.
Glitter was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2015 for his crimes against the woman and two other girls in the 1970s and 1980s. Last year, the High Court ruled in favor of the woman, awarding her compensation for the trauma and loss of earnings caused by Glitter. Additional victims have since come forward to pursue legal action against the disgraced singer.
The bankruptcy proceedings, conducted under Glitter’s real name Paul Gadd, took place in April at a court in Devon. A trustee now has the authority to seize Glitter’s assets, including his £2 million penthouse in London, to fulfill the compensation owed to his victims.
Despite his tainted reputation, Glitter continues to receive royalties from his music catalog, earning each time his songs are played on various platforms. His past hits, such as “I’m the Leader of the Gang (I Am),” have contributed to his ongoing earnings.
Having served time in Vietnam for previous offenses, Glitter was later convicted in a UK court for further sexual abuse charges. Scorer emphasized the importance of seeking justice for the victims and holding Glitter accountable for his actions.
The impact of Glitter’s abuse on the victim’s life has been profound, affecting her education, career, and personal relationships. Although released in 2023, Glitter was soon back in custody for violating parole conditions and currently remains incarcerated.
