A general practitioner has raised an urgent alert concerning the extended usage of three commonly prescribed medications, highlighting their potential for dependence and severe adverse effects. Dr. Asif Ahmed conveyed his apprehensions via a TikTok video, urging individuals on these drugs to consult their healthcare provider before making decisions about continued treatment.

Initially, Dr. Ahmed discussed omeprazole, a “proton pump inhibitor” employed to manage conditions causing excessive stomach acid. He noted that many individuals are prescribed this medication for simple heartburn and reflux without proper investigation, leading to prolonged usage spanning months or even years, resulting in adverse effects and difficulty discontinuing the medication.

For individuals on long-term omeprazole without clarity on its necessity, Dr. Ahmed recommended consulting their GP, who might gradually reduce the dosage. Transitioning to gabapentin, a potent pain reliever commonly used for nerve pain, Dr. Ahmed cautioned about the high doses required for pain management, often inducing intense drowsiness and sedation. He emphasized the importance of balancing pain relief with maintaining quality of life, acknowledging that while some patients benefit with controlled pain and minimal side effects, such cases are infrequent, and individuals should communicate any side effects to their doctor promptly.

Lastly, Dr. Ahmed highlighted the risks associated with diazepam, a medication frequently prescribed for anxiety, muscle spasms, and seizures. He underscored its high addictive potential, particularly with prolonged use beyond managing acute conditions like panic attacks. Withdrawal symptoms upon discontinuation can be severe and even life-threatening, especially for long-term users. While some patients require diazepam for quality of life maintenance, they are often at higher risk when attempting to cease the medication.

Users on TikTok dealing with health challenges quickly shared their own encounters, highlighting varying experiences with the mentioned medications. The National Health Service (NHS) provided insights into the use of medicines, acknowledging their intended benefits in treating illnesses while cautioning about potential side effects. They stressed the importance of open communication between patients and healthcare professionals regarding medication side effects to ensure optimal treatment outcomes and adherence.

For personalized guidance on your medication regimen, consulting with your GP is always advised to address individual concerns and optimize your health management.
