Severe weather experts are warning that Hurricane Humberto, which has wreaked havoc in the Caribbean and the US, could potentially trigger a significant storm in Britain over the upcoming weekend. The remnants of the powerful Category 4 hurricane are expected to traverse the Atlantic Ocean, heading straight towards the UK. This may result in the season’s first named storm for Britain, likely to be called Storm Amy, bringing with it high winds and heavy rainfall. Meteorologists anticipate this weather event to be substantial.

Initially intensifying in the Caribbean, Humberto is projected to move between the US and Bermuda before veering towards the wider Atlantic Ocean, where it is anticipated to weaken into a tropical storm by Wednesday evening. However, there are concerns that the storm could still impact Britain later in the week, potentially bringing winds of up to 70mph, particularly affecting the northern and western regions of the country.

According to British Weather Services’ meteorologist Jim Dale, “Storm Amy is expected to emerge following the remnants of Humberto by Friday or Saturday, ushering in strong winds and significant precipitation.” The exact trajectory and impact are yet to be determined, but the potential for a substantial weather event looms, with anticipated wind speeds of 50-70mph and rainfall ranging between 30-60mm. The northern and western areas are likely to bear the brunt of the storm.

The Met Office has confirmed that Humberto is likely to influence Britain’s weather later in the week, potentially leading to wet and very windy conditions around the first weekend of October. While the exact timing of the storm’s arrival in the UK remains uncertain, weather maps suggest it could reach British shores around 7pm on Friday night.

Forecasts indicate that Humberto’s remnants are expected to make landfall in Northern Ireland before moving towards Wales and Scotland, with Glasgow and Bangor expected to experience wind speeds exceeding 70mph during the early hours of Saturday. Northern Scotland is predicted to receive the most significant amount of rainfall, with nearly 30mm expected to fall within a three-hour period starting at 4am on Saturday.

By Saturday afternoon, the storm is anticipated to have passed over the UK into the North Sea. However, a residual tail of the storm may affect northern Scotland on Sunday morning, potentially bringing overnight wind speeds of up to 60mph.
