Jannik Sinner Withdraws from U.S. Open

Date:

Top-seeded Jannik Sinner has decided to pull out of the U.S. Open due to an ongoing right knee injury that has kept him out of action since claiming victory at Wimbledon. Sinner, who recently secured back-to-back titles at the All England Club by defeating Alexander Zverev, opted to skip the lead-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati to focus on recovery.

In a statement released on Friday, the 25-year-old Italian expressed his disappointment at not being able to compete at the upcoming U.S. Open, acknowledging the need for more time to address his knee issue. Sinner, the 2024 U.S. Open champion, faced defeat in last year’s final against Carlos Alcaraz.

Meanwhile, Alcaraz, who has been sidelined with a right wrist injury since April, confirmed his readiness to participate in the New York tournament. The rivalry between Sinner and Alcaraz has been a highlight in men’s tennis, with the duo meeting in the last three Grand Slam finals in 2025, culminating in Alcaraz’s victory in New York.

Sinner, boasting a remarkable record of 44 wins and 3 losses with six titles this year, experienced a setback at the French Open before bouncing back to claim his fifth Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. This marks the first time Sinner will miss a Grand Slam event since his debut at the U.S. Open in 2019.
