Jessica Rawstron, a smart energy engineer, recommends leaving your oven door open after cooking to utilize the residual heat escaping from the appliance.
According to Jessica, instead of closing the oven door immediately after cooking, keeping it open allows the heat to slowly transfer into your kitchen, helping to maintain warmth in your house during mealtime. She also advises caution to prevent children and pets from approaching the open oven door.
In addition to this tip, British Gas suggests various ways to winter-proof your home, such as sealing gaps around windows and doors to prevent draughts.
To ensure efficient heating, it is recommended to regularly bleed radiators and schedule annual boiler servicing. As cold weather grips parts of the UK, yellow warnings for snow and ice have been issued.
Households are likely to face increased energy bills following a rise in prices. The current price cap for gas and electricity for households paying by direct debit stands at £1,758 annually. This cap limits unit rates and standing charges but not the total energy cost, which still depends on usage.
For those on different payment methods, the annual price cap varies, with pre-payment meters at £1,711 per year and receipt of bill payments at £1,894 per year. The price cap is subject to quarterly updates, with the next change expected in April 2026.
