A star from the series “Traitors” expressed her appreciation for the King’s presence at the unveiling of the first memorial honoring LGBT armed forces veterans. Leanne Quigley, a former Army soldier and winner of Series 3 of a BBC reality show, described the day as impactful, marking 25 years since the ban on LGBT individuals in the services was lifted. She emphasized the relief, validation, and visibility felt by many, making it a significant occasion.
At the ceremony, Leanne, 28, highlighted the significance of having the King participate and shared touching interactions with veterans who had endured hardships post-dismissal. The event stirred emotions and a sense of recognition among attendees, many now identifying proudly as veterans after years of feeling marginalized.
This milestone event marked His Majesty the King’s first official engagement at an LGBT function. The ban, enforced until 2000 despite the decriminalization of homosexuality, resulted in the unjust dismissal of numerous individuals from the Army, Royal Navy, and RAF. The Mirror has long supported Fighting With Pride’s efforts to advocate for recognition, support, and compensation for LGBT veterans.
The dedication service, held at the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire, witnessed over 100 current and former armed forces members, accompanied by the monarch, in attendance. The ceremony featured musical performances by the Band of the Irish Guard and unveiled a sculpture resembling an opened letter symbolizing the use of personal letters to harm serving personnel.
Brigadier Clare Phillips, speaking at the event, highlighted her journey from secrecy and fear to pride and joy in her career. She emphasized the importance of honoring past sacrifices and ensuring progress in acceptance and support for all service members irrespective of orientation, race, or gender.
Louise Sandher-Jones, the minister for Veterans and People, termed the day as significant for LGBT veterans, encouraging those impacted by the ban to step forward. She detailed restoration schemes available for affected veterans, including financial compensation and non-financial measures like rank and medal reinstatement, urging eligible individuals to seek support.
The event emphasized the importance of protecting and celebrating diversity within the armed forces, fostering an environment where talent, leadership, and integrity can thrive. It underscored the ongoing commitment to acknowledging and honoring the service, sacrifices, and struggles of LGBT individuals within the military.
