Labour minister Jake Richards acknowledged concerns about the potential negative impact on children of exposing criminals on Community Payback schemes. He emphasized the legitimacy of worries that such disclosure could cause lasting harm to kids. Following a plea to Justice Secretary David Lammy by over 20 justice entities and individuals, Richards stated that a thorough examination of the implementation details will be conducted.

While recognizing the public’s right to witness justice being served, Richards defended the importance of transparency in the justice system. The Government’s Sentencing Bill, set for parliamentary discussion, proposes to reveal the identities of individuals sentenced to unpaid work post-conviction.

Richards stressed the necessity for communities to have confidence in the justice system and reiterated the importance of showcasing accountability. He expressed the need to address concerns raised and ensure ethical and lawful implementation of such measures. Notable signatories of the letter opposing the measure included Andy Keen-Downs, Dr. Carol Homden, and Pia Sinha, cautioning against the potential harmful repercussions on countless children and youth.
