Labour should disavow the notion that immigration is the root cause of all of Britain’s issues, according to Lucy Powell. The deputy leader contender urged the Labour party to reclaim the narrative from those fostering division in the country, emphasizing the heightened responsibility that comes with being in government.

During a screening of the Mirror’s new YouTube series, “Island of Strangers,” at the Labour conference in Liverpool, Powell highlighted the party’s historical role in uniting people amidst division and hatred. She stressed the necessity for Labour to challenge the idea that immigration is solely to blame for the nation’s problems, attributing them to various other factors, particularly a system that fails ordinary citizens.

Powell’s sentiments were echoed by Ros Wynne Jones, the Real Britain columnist for the Mirror, who acknowledged people’s frustrations but emphasized that directing anger towards immigration does not address underlying issues. The “Island of Strangers” series is available on YouTube, with new episodes premiering every Friday.

The call to action is for Labour to occupy a space where they actively combat division and demonstrate their commitment to resolving the country’s challenges by bringing people together.
