Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the last-ranked Calgary Wild pulled off a surprising 4-3 victory against the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the home team in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 about 13 minutes later. Jung Min-Young and Melanie Forbes scored for Ottawa to level the score at 2-2 just before halftime.
Thurton secured her second goal of the match just before the break, propelling the Wild to a lead they maintained. Jorian Baucom also found the net for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws, ending their 10-game unbeaten streak.
Despite having 54% possession, the Rapid were outshot 16-13 (9-6 on target). The Wild earned six of the game’s 11 corners, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored twice to lead the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C. De Filippo equalized in the 57th minute and then scored the winning goal five minutes into second-half stoppage time.
Jordyn Rhodes had given the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 lead with a goal in the 19th minute. The Rise controlled 56% of possession and outshot the Tides 18-13, including 6-4 on target. Halifax took four of the game’s six corners, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued.
