“Liberals’ Future at Stake: Federal Byelections Loom”

Date:

Voters are set to participate in elections on Monday to choose new representatives in three federal byelections in North Vancouver-Capilano, Beaches-East York, and Chicoutimi-Le Fjord. Currently, the Liberal party holds 170 seats in the House of Commons, with opposition parties collectively holding 166 seats.

For the Liberals to maintain control of the legislative agenda, they must secure victories in at least two of the upcoming byelections. The Chicoutimi-Le Fjord race is anticipated to be highly contested, with the Liberals and Bloc Québécois vying for the seat, as indicated by recent polls. Daniel Gobeil represents the Liberals, while Caroline Dubé is the Bloc candidate. Other contenders in the riding include Régis Gaudreault for the Conservatives, Raphaël Émond for the New Democratic Party, and Nathe Perrone for the Green Party.

In Beaches-East York, candidates are competing to replace former Liberal MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, who won the riding with a significant margin in the 2025 federal election. The candidates in this riding include Tanveer Shahnawaz for the Liberals, Jim Syrbos for the Conservatives, Shannon Devine for the NDP, and Bruce Livesey for the Green Party.

In North Vancouver-Capilano, candidates are seeking to fill the vacancy left by former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson, who recently became Canada’s ambassador to the European Union. The candidates in this riding are Braeden Caley for the Liberals, Stephen Curran for the Conservatives, Stephen Tweedale for the NDP, and Shelley Luce for the Green Party.

CBC News will provide special coverage of the byelections featuring chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton and host of Power & Politics, David Cochrane, starting at 9:30 p.m. ET. The outcome of these byelections could have significant implications for the balance of power in the House of Commons.

The prime minister has yet to announce three more byelections in Quebec and one in Ontario. Additionally, Conservative MPs in Saskatchewan and Ontario are expected to resign from their seats in the near future, potentially leading to more byelections. If the Liberals face losses in all three upcoming byelections, they will have more opportunities to secure the necessary wins for a majority in future contests.
