Lidl, the popular supermarket chain, is venturing into the mobile phone industry, aiming to offer cost-effective phone plans to compete with established networks. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by Lidl, which also includes the launch of 50 new stores nationwide.

Following in the footsteps of other non-traditional telecom competitors like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl plans to introduce budget-friendly phone plans in countries beyond Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, potentially expanding to the UK, US, France, and Spain. By partnering with 1GLOBAL communications provider, Lidl will operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), leveraging existing infrastructure for its mobile services.

In addition to its telecom venture, Lidl is set to open over 50 new stores within the next year, creating 2,000 jobs across locations such as Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury. With more than 1,000 stores already in the UK and a workforce of over 35,000, Lidl’s expansion aims to benefit local communities and provide accessibility to affordable, healthy food.

The agreement with 1GLOBAL also involves Schwarz Group acquiring a 9.9% stake in the company, which aligns with Schwarz’s broader digital strategy. Schwarz Digits, the group’s cloud computing and cybersecurity division, along with investments in AI startups, demonstrate its digital growth ambitions. Analysts suggest that Lidl’s entry into new markets could disrupt established telecom providers, emphasizing competitive pricing and convenience.

Kate Dearden, the Employment Minister, praised Lidl’s investment for creating thousands of quality jobs with fair wages, contributing to community prosperity. This strategic move showcases Lidl’s commitment to innovation and economic growth while enhancing its digital footprint in the market.
