Lucy Powell has been elected as the new Labour deputy leader after narrowly defeating Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson. Powell, the former leader of the Commons, secured 87,407 votes in the contest, surpassing Phillipson’s 73,536 votes. This victory is seen as a signal from Labour members for a change in direction from Keir Starmer’s Government.

In her post-election speech, Powell emphasized the need for unity and progress in the face of rising division and discontent. She called for the Labour Party to offer hope and deliver the significant change desired by the country. The election saw a turnout of 16.6% out of 970,642 eligible voters, with a total of 160,993 votes cast.

Powell pledged to be an ally to the Prime Minister and stressed the importance of reclaiming the political narrative from divisive voices. She highlighted the need to address deep-rooted inequalities in wealth, regions, class, and health to create a fairer society.

Responding to Powell’s election, the Prime Minister congratulated her and expressed confidence in her leadership as Deputy leader. He emphasized the government’s commitment to driving forward the changes desired by the British people.

Powell’s election marks the fourth time a woman has been elected to the position of Labour deputy leader, following Margaret Beckett, Harriet Harman, and Angela Rayner. Rayner, in her resignation statement, emphasized the importance of bold action and vowed to continue fighting to make a positive impact.

Rayner had resigned from multiple positions, including Housing Secretary and Deputy PM, after admitting to underpaying stamp duty on her property. Despite the change in her title, she affirmed her dedication to serving with determination and socialist values in the Commons.
