“Major Transit Overhaul in Ottawa to Support Return of Federal Workers”

Date:

Sweeping changes are set to transform Ottawa’s public transit network by the end of August, with a focus on accommodating the return of federal workers to downtown offices. OC Transpo is preparing for a significant increase in trips to and from Ottawa’s core, as private vehicle travel capacity is limited. The $29-million plan includes more O-Train services during peak hours, enhancements to para transport systems, introduction of new express bus routes, and improved connections to key job hubs.

Seven new Express routes in the 500-series will provide faster connections between transit stations and major employment areas. Notable changes include Route 526 connecting Blair station to Chapel Hill station, Route 561 and Route 562 linking Tunney’s Pasture station to Terry Fox and Eagleson stations, and additional routes from Gatineau to various Ottawa locations.

Weekday service improvements will see increased trips on several routes, more accurate schedules on 22 routes, and specific enhancements tailored to meet commuter needs. While some adjustments are standard seasonal tweaks, certain planned developments like the east extension of the O-Train will not be ready by August 30.

The broader Transportation and Mobility Strategy and Action Plan encompasses various initiatives such as traffic camera installations, construction adjustments, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure enhancements, and proposed parking changes. These measures aim to optimize transportation efficiency and address the evolving commuting needs in the region.
