In Las Vegas, a man from Ontario was found guilty of animal cruelty charges after stealing a flamingo named Peachy from its habitat at a well-known hotel. Mitchell Fairbarn, accused of causing harm to the flamingo in a drunken and malicious act, faced trial and was convicted on felony and misdemeanor counts. He is awaiting sentencing, facing a possible four-year prison term for the felony charge and six months in jail for the misdemeanor.
Fairbarn, a contractor from rural Ontario, shared in court that he consumed “30 to 40” beers during his Las Vegas trip for a construction expo. He admitted to taking the flamingo from the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel and Casino as a supposed joke, expressing regret for his actions while intoxicated.
Witnesses testified that Fairbarn was seen carrying the flamingo through the hotel, causing the bird distress. The veterinarian treating Peachy revealed injuries including missing feathers and blood loss consistent with trauma, requiring weeks of medication for recovery.
Fairbarn’s defense claimed that he did not intend to harm the bird and attributed his actions to intoxication and poor judgment. Despite the incident, Peachy has since recovered, with Caesars Entertainment expressing gratitude for the attention to the animals’ well-being.
Animal rights advocate John Waudby commended the verdict as a message against animal mistreatment in Nevada. The case highlighted a series of recent animal cruelty incidents at Las Vegas casinos, emphasizing the importance of respecting and protecting wildlife in such environments.
