A Mexican court has issued arrest warrants for a British man, Harry Robinson, and a Mexican woman, Jacqueline Herrera Herrera, who are accused of defrauding a Canadian couple of their retirement savings in an alleged condo-flip scheme. The warrants were issued in late July by a Quintana Roo state court judge. Robinson and Herrera are currently seeking to challenge these warrants in a Mexican federal court, as indicated by court records.
Although the federal court process regarding the arrest warrants won’t affect the ongoing criminal case against them at the state level, they are facing accusations from the state prosecutor’s office of committing fraud through deception. The victims, Cindy Thompson and Glenn Brown from Curve Lake, Ont., sent $280,000 to a company co-owned by Robinson and Herrera based on promises of lucrative returns on a condo investment in Playa del Carmen that never materialized.
Thompson and Brown initiated a criminal complaint against Robinson and Herrera earlier this year. The incident dates back to late 2024 when Thompson, exploring real estate opportunities in Mexico, came across XMEX Investments, a company managed by Robinson. After sending a total of $170,000 for a one-bedroom condo with no keys received, the couple was convinced by Robinson to invest an additional $110,000 in a deal involving seven condos, promising significant profits.
Despite efforts to have the arrest warrant against Herrera dismissed, the legal process is ongoing. A hearing regarding Robinson’s application is scheduled for September 8 in Cancun. Amidst the legal battles, Herrera has alleged in WhatsApp messages that Robinson misappropriated funds, while Robinson counterclaimed that Herrera embezzled all the money.
Thompson was offered a cash settlement of about $188,000 and a commercial property in Cancun worth approximately $328,000 by Herrera through her lawyer, but Thompson rejected these offers. Frustrated by the complexity of the Mexican judicial system and the challenges of navigating the case, Thompson expressed a mix of hope and anxiety about the ongoing legal proceedings.
