A man who was checking his mobile phone while driving ran over and killed an 85-year-old grandfather in Wakefield. Qabir Hussain, aged 54, was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving after his van struck David Brooke in January 2022. Hussain has been sentenced to five years in prison, according to West Yorkshire Police.
The granddaughter of the victim expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her beloved grandfather, describing him as a kind and loving man whose absence has shattered the family. She emphasized the lasting impact of his death, stating, “The day you took him away from me and my family will live with me forever.”
Following the crash, an investigation revealed that Hussain’s phone was unlocked and actively used to check emails and browse the internet while he was behind the wheel. Detective Sergeant Nina Roper from the Major Collision Enquiry Team highlighted the tragic outcome of distracted driving, emphasizing the importance of maintaining focus while driving to prevent such devastating incidents.
DS Roper stressed the significance of avoiding distractions while driving, particularly the use of mobile phones, which is classified as one of the “Fatal Five” offenses contributing to serious and fatal accidents. She urged drivers to prioritize safety over any distractions and consider the potential consequences of their actions on others’ lives.
In addition to mobile phone usage, the “Fatal Five” offenses identified by the police include speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, not wearing a seatbelt, and careless driving. The authorities aim to raise awareness and educate drivers to reduce road fatalities and injuries as part of their Vision Zero initiative. Drivers are reminded to reflect on the tragic loss of David Brooke and his family before engaging in any form of distracted driving.
